Several enterprises servicing home and industrial refrigerators and air conditioners in Ferghana Valley were provided with modern equipment for recovery and recycling of ozone-depleting substances.
The equipment was provided by the joint project of the State Committee for Nature Protection, UNDP in Uzbekistan and Global Environment Facility “Initial Implementation of Accelerated Hydrochlorofluorocarbon Phase-Out in the Countries with Economy in Transition Region”.
Within the project, two centers for recycling and reuse of refrigerants have been established in Fergana and Andijan. In total, five such centers will be created, while the number of state and private enterprises to be provided with equipment will exceed 100.
Improving the quality of services for servicing refrigeration and climate control equipment will further help in reduction of uncontrolled release of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) to the atmosphere.
In Uzbekistan, 99,95% of ODS have been fully withdrawn from circulation, which that is ahead of deadlines foreseen by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which entered into force on 1 January 1989.
Total ODS consumption in the country has decreased from 1,967.2 tonnes to 9.86 tonnes (with consideration of ozone depletion potential), or by 99.5% compared to 1989.
Uzbekistan joined the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol in May 1993. In 1998, the country signed the London and Copenhagen Amendments, and in 2006 ratified the Montreal and Beijing Amendments to the Protocol.
