The water pipe burst in Tashkent’s Yunusabad district caused serious flooding in several streets and residential areas early Wednesday.

The pictures and videos appearing in social media showed cars slowly moving in more than half-meter deep water.

Ravshan Yoqubjjonov, spokesman for the city’s water supply company, told Gazeta.uz the 80-cm diameter pipe burst because of a brief stop at the nearby boiler plant, which caused increase on pressure.

Car traffic was shopped for some time in the morning because of flooded streets and resumed later.

Because of the accident, water and electricity supply was stopped in parts of the capital’s northern densely populated district.

The Emergency ministry of Uzbekistan said basements and surroundings of 13 apartment houses were flooded. No injured were reported.

Gazeta.uz correspondents who visited the district saw people cleaning the hallways of their houses and children playing in water near their houses.

As of 9 pm, the repair works had been fully completed, and water supply was restored, the city hokimiyat (mayor's office) said. However, some houses were still without electricity because of high humidity in the basements where communication networks are laid.
