Deputy minister of transport of Uzbekistan Jasurbek Choriyev on Friday met the head of the Global Rail Group of Hyundai Rotem (South Korea) Kwak Chol-Hoon.
According to the press service of the Transport Ministry, the sides discussed the project to localize the production of electric trains in Uzbekistan. The trains are currently used by the KORAIL company.
The sides agreed to explore additional opportunities for the project, analyze the proposals and examine possible production areas.
In June, during the visit of president of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol to Uzbekistan, a contract was signed with Hyundai Rotem for the supply and maintenance of six electric trains for the new high-speed “Tashkent — Urgench — Khiva” line.
In August, president of Uzbekistan approved the parameters of the feasibility study for the project to purchase six Hyundai Rotem trains. Korea’s Eximbank will provide a 40-year loan of 185.18 million euros for the project.
The electric train will be named Jalaladdin Manguberdi after the 13th-century shah of Khorezm. Once the line is operational, the travel time from Tashkent to Khiva is expected to be reduced to 7 hours from more than 13 nowadays.
