President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with president of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of an international forum in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, the president’s press service said. The forum was devoted to the 300th anniversary of the great Turkmen poet and thinker Makhtumkuli Fraghi.

The sides discussed the development of multifaceted Uzbek-Iranian relations and highlighted the active contacts and exchanges at various levels. Both countries have seen growth in trade turnover and the number of joint ventures, the press service noted.

The presidents stressed the importance of supporting and swiftly implementing cooperation projects, as well as expanding the list of products within the preferential trade agreement.

Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the need to hold a meeting of the joint commission on economic cooperation between the two countries.

“We can develop our cooperation in scientific, industrial and cultural fields,” the Iranian president stated, according to his press service.

The presidents extended mutual invitations to visit their countries. They also exchanged views on international and regional agenda.

Masoud Pezeshkian was elected president of Iran in July, following the death of president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.

Congratulating Masoud Pezeshkian on his election, president Shavkat Mirziyoyev reiterated Uzbekistan’s interest in the “consistent and effective expansion of cooperation” with Iran, “which has great potential and opportunities and has been developing dynamically in recent years”.
