Nuriddin Ismoilov has been re-elected as speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan at the first session of the chamber after the October elections on Monday. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the session.

The speaker is elected among the deputies by secret ballot and by a majority of votes. The term of office equals to that of the Legislative Chamber, which is five years.

According to the Constitution, which was updated last year, the same person cannot be a speaker for more than two consecutive terms (this does not apply to officials who were in office when the renewed Constitution was adopted).

Nuriddin Ismoilov (born in 1959, graduated from Tashkent State University, lawyer by education) represents the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan. He has headed the lower house of parliament since January 2015. In January 2020, he was re-elected to this position.

Previously (since 2012), he worked as a state adviser to the president on cooperation with the Oliy Majlis, political and public organizations. Before that (since 2005), he held the post of chairman of the Legislative Chamber’s Committee for Legislation. and Judicial and Legal Issues.

Two deputy speakers were also elected at the session. They are Mavluda Khodjayeva and Rahim Hakimov. Both deputies represent the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, UzLiDeP.

The number of vice-speakers in March was limited to two by the resolution of the Legislative Chamber. Previously, representatives of all five factions of the parties had the right to be deputy speakers. In addition, there was one first deputy and one deputy for coordination of information activities in the Legislative Chamber and interaction with the media.

Mavluda Khodjayeva (born in 1962) previously was the chairperson of the Committee for Labor and Social Issues of the Legislative Chamber. She is a pediatrician by profession, having graduated from the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute.

Rahim Hakimov (1983) has worked as deputy advisor to the president for socio-political development since December 2022. A graduate of Namangan State University (2003) and Tashkent State Law University (2005), he worked as deputy minister of higher and specialized secondary education, deputy minister of justice, and rector of Tashkent State Law University. He also served as a deputy of the Legislative Chamber in 2015−2019.

Vice-speakers cease their party membership for the period of their term of office and cannot be part of the party faction in the Legislative Chamber.
