President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree on 16 November, appointing 9 members to the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, supplementing the 56 senators elected from Tashkent, Karakalpakstan and 12 regions.
The appointees are as follows (senators previously appointed by the president are highlighted in bold):
Azamat Ziyo — director of the Institute of History at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
Munojatkhon Yulchieva — famous singer, professor at Uzbek National Institute of Musical Arts, hero of Uzbekistan.
Abdusaid Kuchimov — general director of Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA).
Kudratillo Rafikov — chairman of the Council of the Trade Unions Federation of Uzbekistan.
Mir-Akbar Rakhmankulov — director of the Institute of Legislation and Legal Policy under the president.
Sodik Safayev — first deputy chairman of the Senate.
Alisher Sa’dullayev — director of the Youth Affairs Agency.
Sodikjon Turdiyev — chairman of Nuroniy Foundation for Social Support of Veterans of Uzbekistan, hero of Uzbekistan.
Tursinkhan Khudaybergenov — advisor to the president, hero of Uzbekistan.
Following last year’s recent constitutional changes, the total number of senators (elected from regions of Uzbekistan and appointed by the president) was reduced from 100 to 65.
The Senate now includes 4 elected members (previously 6) from each region, as well as Karakalpakstan and Tashkent — 56 in total. These senators are elected by local kengashes (councils) among deputies elected at the elections.
Additionally, 9 senators (previously 16) are appointed by the president from among the most distinguished citizens with extensive practical experience and notable contributions in fields such as science, art, literature and public service.
Between 7 and 12 November, the Jokargy Kenes (Supreme Council) of Karakalpakstan and regional kengashes held sessions to elect senators from their deputies.
