Tanzila Narbayeva has been re-elected as chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, UzA news agency reported.

The first session of the newly composed upper chamber following the October elections was held on Tuesday, with president Shavkat Mirziyoyev in attendance.

The Senate chairperson is elected by secret ballot for a five-year term during the chamber’s inaugural session, based on the president’s nomination and requiring a majority vote from its members. As per the Constitution, amended last year, no individual may serve as Senate chairperson for more than two consecutive terms (does not apply to chairperson at the time of adoption of the renewed Constitution).

Tanzila Narbayeva, born in 1956, is a graduate of Tashkent State University (1981) and holds degrees of candidate of pedagogical sciences and doctor of sociologic sciences, professor.

She has served as Senate chairperson since June 2019 and was re-elected in January 2020. Before her Senate role, she was deputy prime minister and chairperson of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan from December 2016, and previously the chairperson of the Federation of Trade Unions — from 2010 to 2016.

Sadyk Safayev has been re-elected as the first deputy chairperson of the Senate, a position he has held since December 2016. Alongside this role, Safayev continues to be the rector of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

The chairperson of the Jokargy Kenes (Supreme Council) of Karakalpakstan Amanbay Orynbaev has also been re-elected as deputy сhairperson of the Senate.

Earlier, Gazeta.uz reported that Nuriddin Ismoilov had been elected speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis for the third time.
