President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been unanimously elected as chairperson of Uzbekistan’s National Olympic Committee, the NOC press service announced.
The 41st general assembly of the NOC was held on 25 November. It was attended by prime minister Abdulla Aripov, presidential advisor Odil Abdurakhmanov, sports minister Adkham Ikramov, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) vice president Otabek Umarov and others.
General secretary Oybek Kasimov, who chaired the event, emphasized that, per the committee’s charter, the NOC leadership will now be restructured every Olympic cycle.
Minister Adkham Ikramov presented a report on achievements during the previous Olympic cycle.
Prime minister Abdulla Aripov highlighted successes but also pointed out missed opportunities, criticizing underperforming federations for not meeting expectations.
The assembly then addressed the issue of electing a new NOC chairperson. Former head Rustam Shaabdurakhmanov left the post in February 2022, and minister Adkham Ikramov has been overseeing the committee’s activities since then.
“Considering the critical need for thorough preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, the request from the country’s Olympic community, athletes and coaches, prime minister Abdulla Aripov proposed the candidacy of president Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The delegates unanimously approved the nomination, electing Shavkat Mirziyoyev as the NOC chairperson,” the statement said.
OCA vice president Otabek Umarov, who is president’s son-in-law, was elected first deputy chairperson of the NOC, Oybek Kasimov was reelected as secretary general and Sherzod Tashmatov as deputy chairperson.
