Tashkent has been selected to host the 2027 senior World Fencing Championship, a crucial qualifier for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The announcement was made on 30 November during the International Fencing Federation (FIE) congress in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s National Olympic Committee said.
The championship will take place from 20 to 28 July 2027, and will play a significant role in determining athletes' Olympic qualification rankings for the Games scheduled from 14 to 30 July 2028 in the US.
As reported earlier, tt the same congress, Russian entrepreneur of Uzbek origin Alisher Usmanov was re-elected as president of the FIE.
Secretary general of Uzbekistan’s Fencing Federation Gulnara Saidova was elected to the FIE executive committee.
The event also included an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding achievements. A sabre fencer from Uzbekistan Fernanda Herrera was honored for finishing the year as the top-ranked youth athlete in the world.
