Human rights society Ezgulik was awarded the Liberty, Equality, Fraternity international prize by the French Republic, the French National Consultative Commission on Human Rights announced on 4 December.

The prize, established in 1988, aims to acknowledge the essential role of civil society in promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Each year, the award is presented to five laureates from around the world, each receiving a monetary prize of €14,000. This year’s theme focused on “protecting the human rights of civilians in any situation involving armed conflict”.

Alongside Ezgulik, this year’s winners include the Mandela center in Cameroon, the Citizens organization in Haiti, Ludirlena PÉREZ CARVAJAL’s organization in Colombia and the Caesar organization in Syria.

The awarding ceremony will take place on 10 December, Human Rights Day, in Paris. The award will be presented to the head of the Ezgulik society Abdurahmon Tashanov.

Founded in 2002, Ezgulik is the only independent human rights organization officially registered in Uzbekistan. The awarded project aims to raise awareness among civilians about the dangers of Uzbekistani labor migrants and prisoners in Russia being forcibly recruited to participate in armed conflicts.

The organization’s core mission is to protect human rights and interests while gathering, analyzing and disseminating information in the sphere of human rights.
