Four people died as a result of explosion at a gas filing station in Ferghana city on Monday, including one on-site and tree in the hospital, the Fergana Regional Police Department said.

The explosion and subsequent fire occurred around 1:45 PM at the Petrolium propane station. The incident was caused by a leak from a crack in a gas container. An earlier statement from the regional Emergency Situations Department indicated that the explosion was the result of violations of the technological process and safety rule breaches while handling liquefied gas.

Initial reports indicated that four individuals were injured and eight more were under medical observation.

The Regional Police Department opened a criminal case under article 257, section 2, clause “a” (violation of labour safety rules resulting in death) and article 259, section 2, clause “a” (violation of fire safety rules resulting in death) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan.

As part of the investigation, five individuals have been detained. Relevant forensic examinations have been ordered, as well as investigative actions are ongoing, the statement said.
