A resident of Tashkent region was sentenced to five days of administrative detention for harassing a female flight attendant on an Uzbekistan Airways flight from Sochi to Tashkent. Sergeli district criminal court issued the ruling on 7 January.

According to court documents reviewed by Gazeta.uz, the 39-year-old J. E. (who was previously held administratively liable) repeatedly touched the side of a flight attendant during the 31 December flight while under the influence of alcohol.

In court, the man denied harassing the attendant, claiming that he had accidentally touched her side while trying to pick up a dropped item. He assured the court that such behavior would not happen again and asked for leniency in sentencing.

The claimant stated that J. E. repeatedly touched her side and made unwelcome advances. She reprimanded the passenger and asked him to stop, but he continued his actions, speaking rudely to her and interfering with her duties to serve the passengers.

The court found the man guilty according to part 1 of article 41−1 of the Administrative Responsibility Code (sexual harassment) and gave him five days of administrative detention, the maximum penalty under this article.

In determining the penalty, the court considered the man’s remorse as a mitigating factor. However, his intoxicated state during the offense was deemed an aggravating circumstance.

Additionally, the man will have to pay 15% of the base calculation amount (56,250 soums, or $4.32) for each day of detention in the special facility.
