In 2024, 9,364 traffic accidents were officially registered in Uzbekistan, according to a report presented at a Senate session of the Oliy Majlis on Friday.

This figure represents a decrease of 475 accidents, or 4.8%, compared to 2023, when 9,839 accidents were recorded. In 2022, the number stood at 9,902, while in 2021, it was 10,001.

The number of people injured in accidents also declined, from 9,209 in 2023 to 8,901 in 2024, marking a 3.3% reduction. The number of fatalities decreased to 2,203, which is 79 fewer than the previous year, reflecting a 3.5% drop.

Data on injured and deceased children in 2024 was not specified. In 2023, there were 1,794 accidents involving children, resulting in 1,568 injuries and 263 fatalities. Full-year data for 2022 was not published, but in the first 10 months of that year, 226 children lost their lives in traffic accidents.

Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security Kutbiddin Burkhanov, who presented the statistics, attributed the accidents primarily to citizens' disregard for legal responsibilities and lack of knowledge of traffic regulations.

He also highlighted the absence of effective enforcement mechanisms in the current legislation to ensure the inevitability of penalties for traffic violations as a factor contributing to the number of accidents.
