Under the law “On geographical indications”, such a designation identifies a product as originating from a specific geographic location, where its quality, reputation or other characteristics are significantly influenced by its geographical origin.
In August 2023, the Gijduvan shashlyk (Bukhara region) was registered as a geographical indication. In the winter of 2024, designations Guzor tandir goshti (tandoor meat) and Chust knives were also granted registration.
The Ministry of Justice is the authorized state body responsible for the legal protection of geographical indications. The use of a registered geographical indication by individuals who do not have the right to do so is considered illegal.
