Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage Agency’s proposal to conserve Sher-Dor Madrasah on Samarkand’s historic Registan Square has won a $500,000 US Ambassador’s Fund grant. The funding will enable facade restoration, with international experts brought in to lead the project.
For the first time, Samarkand will host the World Rapid & Blitz Championships. From December 26 to 30, the world’s best chess players will compete for the title of world champions in rapid and blitz. FIDE head Arkady Dvorkovich commented on the choice of Uzbekistan as the venue.
President Mirziyoyev visited Samarkand and reviewed the master plan of the “Shirin” modern district, which will be built on 389 hectares near the international airport. He instructed to improve the project based on urban planning experience and to expand social services in the new area.
Samarkand became the first city in Uzbekistan to join the EBRD’s Green Cities programme. The Bank is providing the city with a $49 million loan for the purchase and deployment of up to 100 electric buses.
Samarkand is set to receive 350 electric buses, including 100 by the end of the year, as part of a $95 million project with the EBRD to significantly enhance the city’s public transportation infrastructure.
Foreign ministers from Central Asian countries and Russia convened in Samarkand, designating Samarkand as the CIS Cultural Capital and Tashkent as the Youth Capital for 2024. Additionally, a resolution was endorsed to establish a quadrennial Olympic event for children with disabilities.
