Uzbekistan and Chinese CNNC are set to assess the possibility of deploying China’s small modular nuclear reactors in Uzbekistan. Delegations from both countries also discussed plans to expand uranium ore extraction and processing capacities, with a view to utilizing the fuel in NPPs.
A preliminary assessment of 14 potential sites for the construction of small nuclear plants has been carried out, director of UzAtom agency said.
A small nuclear power plant is currently in the design phase, energy minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov said. The project costs will be determined after the feasibility study, he added. The minister confirmed plans to build a large nuclear power plant by 2040.
The first meeting for the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) took place at the site. During the visit by the first deputy head of Rosatom, a protocol was signed for the contract’s entry into force. Infrastructure work will begin in the fall.
The first reactor of the small nuclear power plant to be built in Uzbekistan is expected to be launched in five years, the Nuclear Energy Agency said. Asked about the cost of the project. the agency said it was confidential.
Russia will start construction of a small nuclear power station in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan this summer. The contract was signed Monday during the visit of Russian president Vladimir Putin to Tashkent.
